Department of Geotechnical Engineering

July 01, 2025

Overview:

The Department of Geotechnical Engineering in the Civil Engineering discipline originated in 1952 when the Civil Engineering program of the six provinces in central-southern China was amalgamated to form the Central South School of Architectural Engineering. The department introduced the Civil Engineering program, initiated student admissions, and concurrently established the Soil Mechanics Laboratory. In 1995, the Geotechnical Engineering section of the Non-metallic Mineral Research Institute was merged into the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, leading to the establishment of the Institute of Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering. Subsequently, the entire department was integrated into the Civil Engineering discipline. In 1991, authorization was granted for a Master's degree program in Geotechnical Engineering, and in 2003, both doctoral degree authorization and a postdoctoral research station were approved. Since 1998, Geotechnical Engineering has consistently been a key discipline in Hubei Province.

In May 2010, Wuhan University of Technology initiated an exploration of collaborative education between the university and enterprises in the field of Civil Engineering. On September 26, 2013, Wuhan University of Technology and the Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences jointly established the "Chen Zongji Experimental Class" in Civil Engineering as a pilot program for the integration of science, education, and industry, focusing on the geotechnical direction. The "Chen Zongji Experimental Class" fully utilizes the high-quality research and educational resources developed through scientific practices at the Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, as well as the advantages of Wuhan University of Technology in discipline construction, talent cultivation, and student recruitment. Starting from the reform of the talent training model in geotechnical engineering within the Civil Engineering program, the aim is to collaboratively cultivate innovative talents in geotechnical engineering with a solid theoretical foundation, outstanding scientific and technological innovation awareness, and high research capabilities. The "Chen Zongji Experimental Class" offers joint courses, collaborative production internships, and graduation projects. In addition to the university's innovation projects, the Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics applies for 3 to 5 Chinese Academy of Sciences undergraduate innovation projects each year for the experimental class, and a special Chinese Academy of Sciences scholarship is established for the class (equivalent to the amount of the national scholarship). Currently, the "Chen Zongji Experimental Class" has been in operation for nine years, having recruited 315 students. The annual proportion of students admitted to graduate school is 30%, with 60% continuing to pursue master's degrees, and 10% pursuing doctoral degrees after graduation.

Characteristic research fields:
